Suits
I was out shopping with the girlthing today, trying to see if we could find a suit for an interview she has with a lawyers’ firm, and, I wondered (as I often have) why there is such a fantastic array of women’s clothing available and why the choice for men is so limited, and then it hit me.
I think I’ve discovered where men have the edge: suits.
Go into any high street shop that sells suits, and you’ll have a vast choice of colour, fit, size, cut and adornment for men. For women, it seems that you’re in luck if you can find a matching jacket and bottom half (trousers or skirt), never mind waistcoat, belt, cufflinks, hat, etc. However, this is probably part of the bias - women wear things that make them attractive; men wear suits.
Now, this is complete load of horse’s testicles to me: I hate wearing suits. Actually that’s not strictly true - I like wearing a suit, on occasion. It’s when I’m required to wear a suit, to live up to someone else’s expectations, that I get narked. I would instantly give up the overwhelming choice in city wear to have the range women have to pick from.
Anyway, back to the original point of the blog: girly suits. How hard is it to find a good one? Answer: damned hard[1]!
[1] Although not impossible. We found two.
