His Dark Materials
When I first picked up the first book in this series, Northern Lights, I read the first few pages and couldn’t get into it at all: the writing seemed stilted, even archaic, and the characters didn’t grab my attention.
However, I read some articles on Philip Pullman’s own web site and liked his writings there. So I thought to myself perhaps I was a bit harsh, perhaps I should give him another go
.
So I did.
I must admit that, after reading the entirety of Northern Lights, I’ve come around to accepting and becoming more comfortable with his writing style, and understanding why he wrote it in the way that he did. He seems to write from the point of view of the primary character, and the world he’s describing, and modifies the language in a fluid manner dependent on what he’s describing.
So now I’m reading the second book in the series, The Subtle Knife.
I suppose I’m hooked.
