Suspicions Over the No2ID Pledge
Edit: since I wrote this, the pledge has been taken over by the refuse pledge, which has reached its goal within a single month.
If you haven’t seen the No2ID pledge then take a look.
The basic premise is that one person, calling themselves “Stef”, will will refuse to register for an ID card but only if 3,000,000 people will sign up
On the web as a whole, 3,000,000 people is a pretty high number for an audience with strong enough views. Restrict this to the UK, and it’s and even higher proportion.
To be honest, I do have some reservations about the veracity of the initial pledge (if you are Stef, please feel free to contact me and tell me otherwise) due the high numbers, and no overall statement that Stef thinks ID cards are a good or a bad thing.
This might be a ploy to get others to “pledge” but (knowing that only a relatively low number of the people who don’t support the ID scheme are web–savvy enough [or will even be aware of the web site in the first place]) for something knowing it’s going to fail due to the ridiculously high pledge target.
Then again, it might not. I’d be happy to be proved wrong. I’d also be happy to see everyone sign up to reach the target regardless.
